What We Do

The UWI Development & Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) was founded in 1990 as a registered charitable organisation to support the advancement of the University of the West Indies, Mona. Acting as a “bridge” between the University and the wider community, the Fund provides monetary and other support for the University’s programmes to facilitate the unlocking of West Indian potential to ensure continued growth and development within Jamaica, and by extension, the Region.

It's About Giving a Helping Hand

Together we are stronger!
Thank you for joining  us in our mission to change lives!

Making an Impact

UWIDEF has been fortunate over the years to partner with several private sector organizations and donors to provide needy UWI students with scholarships to pursue their dream of attaining a tertiary education.

For many of these students, some of whom are first-generation tertiary graduates, this opportunity has not only changed their lives but the lives of their families.

As we reflect on the past, we cannot help but be grateful for our accomplishments. We are honoured to provide support to UWI, which continues to be a force globally in tertiary education, research and innovation. UWIDEF is grateful to our donors, without whom our vision would remain just a vision.

Your generous contributions make it possible for us to fulfill our commitment to providing support to the UWI through our established projects and through new initiatives, currently being a planned or underway.

The Future is Bright

Funding Dreams

through Scholarships and so much more...

Infrastructure

Quality education requires far more than scholarly tuition. Included in the many projects to which UWIDEF has contributed are: the Centre for Students with Disabilities, improving the infrastructure of the Mona Chapel and providing cutting edge digital technology throughout the campus. The Fund also responds to emergency needs and has provided hundreds of tablets and smart devices to UWI Mona students across Jamaica, to enable students to study from home as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.

Research

Welfare

The advancement of science and research is important to nation-building and so UWIDEF provides assistance to many students doing advanced studies at the University. Donations from UWIDEF, through its partners, have allowed us to fund cancer research, healthcare research as well as research and development in several other areas of study.

We are committed to the vision of Jamaica as a regional hub of pioneers in scientific research and development and will continue to support the island and region in an endeavour to make its global impact in science.

Several beneficiaries of the UWIDEF programmes are first-generation undergraduates. In most cases, their families have made tremendous sacrifices to provide as much assistance as possible. For some families, it can be difficult to support a child in university and their own households.

Initiatives such as the Housing Grant Fund and the Food Voucher Programme help to ease the burden of struggling families and support hundreds of needy students.

Health

Over the past three decades, UWIDEF has made numerous contributions to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). Through your donations, UWIDEF has helped one of Jamaica’s and the Region’s most prominent health care providers, to improve patient care and the delivery of world-class healthcare services to all.

Located on Mona it serves as the teaching hospital for UWI medical students.
